He has been in a relationship with his girlfriend Kelly Frears, they live in Memphis, Tennessee. He is most of the time busy doing his job and traveling around the world to solve various work problems. His relationship with Kelly is somehow disturbed by his busy work routine.

He is spending the Christmas holidays with his family, while having Christmas dinner he receives a call from work and he is told that he is needed in Malaysia for some work-related issue, he must leave on the next FedEx plane.

While flying over the South Pacific ocean, they pass through a violent and heavy storm and the plane crashes into the ocean. All the people on board die in the crash but Chuck survives, he gets on a life raft. The raft floats through the night. Chuck wakes up on an uninhabited island the next morning, along with some FedEx delivery packages. He takes a tour of the island and finds one of the crew member’s dead body and buries it. He tries to escape the island on a damaged raft but he remains unsuccessful, a big tide tosses him into the ocean and he injures his leg while swimming back ashore. Then he realizes that he must survive here until help arrives.

He notices that this is a barren island there is nothing to eat here except coconuts and some fish in the ocean. And there is no drinkable water on the island. Here begins his four-year-long survival. He tries to make fire by rubbing two pieces of wood together, he cuts his hand in the process, he becomes so angry that he throws FedEx boxes, including a Volleyball. He then picks up the volleyball and notices that blood had left a print on it. He then draws a face onto the ball and names it Wilson, as it is a Wilson Sporting Goods volleyball. He is all alone on that island and has no one at all to talk to, so he makes friends with that volleyball and regularly talks to it. He calls this volleyball Wilson and shares his thoughts with it. He takes shelter in a cave on the island, he sleeps there and keeps his stuff in there. He gathers rain waters into the coconut and drinks it. He survives on that island for four years by eating fish without cooking.

One day a big piece of plastic wall from a portable toilet washes up ashore. He realizes that it can be used to set sail. So he starts to build a big raft which can travel into the ocean. He successfully builds and launches it, he stocks it with some water, food, and a FedEx package which he has kept safe and unopened for all this time. He takes his friend Wilson with him. He then gets caught in a heavy storm and his raft gets damaged, he loses his friend Wilson the next day. He gets so upset without Wilson that he cries himself to sleep. He loses all hope and is ready to die in the ocean when a cargo ship picks him up from the ocean and brings him back home.

On his return, everyone is shocked, because they all assumed him dead, and even had a funeral for him. He then meets his girlfriend Kelly who had married another guy now, she is very upset to learn that he is still alive. But she cannot leave her family now, so they part ways.

Chuck then returns to work and takes the FedEx box that he had kept safe and unopened, to the address from where it was sent. He finds no one at home there and leaves the box at the gate, and puts a note on the box that said that this package had saved his life. He then gets back on the road and stops at the crossroad, to correct his directions. Then a lady in a truck stops to guide him about which road he should take. And when the lady leaves he looks at the back of her truck and realizes that the FedEx package belonged to her, as it bears the same marking as her truck and he smiles.
